things that make you go...mmm!

I spent Friday afternoon walking the streets of downtown Portland and stopped at 10th & Adler and found myself in food mecca! There were carts parked side by side, lining a few blocks and crowds at each one. I started at one block and walked around to survey each cart and then decided on "the chicken lady" as the locals call her. Nong's Khao Man Gai is very well known in Portland and around the world, she has been listed as one of the top 10 places to eat in Portland by a british news website and EveryDay with Rachel Ray magazine. You don't have to worry about what to order as there is only one item on the menu, chicken and rice. But hey, if it ain't broke...don't fix it! The chicken is poached and served on top of rice with a side of ginger sauce and cup of soup. The flavors are simple and clean and the sauce makes the entire dish. My brother got a burger from another cart a few steps over and it was delicious! The patty was juicy and the bun was a soft sesame brioche. At The People's Pig I grabbed a soppressata sandwich with goat cheese, pickled peppers and vinaigrette salad. Their menu changes daily and the meats are freshly prepared, can't get any better than that! Lastly, no gastronomic tour in Portland would be complete without a stop at Voodoo Donuts :) We grabbed a voodoo doll and maple bacon bar and they lived up to the hype! The sweet & savory combination was delicious in the maple bacon bar and the  raspberry jelly filled voodoo doll tasted so fresh!

I got the Banana Pudding and it was so delicious and fresh!

cart revolution

I am heading to Portland today and I am very excited! Not only is my cousin getting married but I love the city. I will be spending time in downtown Portland checking out their plethora of food carts. There is even a book about it! CARTopia talks about the food cart revolution, the different types of foods, the history behind some carts, and of course...the FOOD itself! :) If you go to http://www.foodcartsportland.com/ you can look at a map of some of the food cart clusters and that's exactly where I intend to be :)

You'll have a full report next week!

fancy that

Fall is around the corner and I'm excited for all winter accessories like scarfs, mittens, hats, and jackets. Jackets have become more of a statement than a means to keep one warm. There are so many lovely styles but I chose to focus on bomber jackets and moto jackets today. Of course jackets can get pricey but if you look in the right places or scope out some sales...you can snag a great deal that looks expensive. Below I've posted pictures of jackets in a variety of prices to demonstrate that you can look fabulous with any budget!

cobbler gobbler

I am not a huge baker but I have made it a point to test out baking recipes this year. Conveniently we're approaching fall/winter which is my favorite time to enjoy freshly baked goods. This recipe was easy to follow...combine ingredients, top with fruit, then bake! I chose peaches and blueberries for my cobbler and it tasted delicious. I also grabbed some vanilla bean ice cream because ice cream pairs with anything!

1 stick of butter
1 1/4 cup sugar
1 cup self-rising flour
1 cup milk
2 cups fruit

Preheat oven to 350 degrees and combine all ingredients then top with fruit. Bake for 1 hour or until golden brown and bubbly :)

all ingredients minus the butter...so simple

 combine and chop...

 and voila!

the kebob shop

I love going to the kebob shop when I'm in San Diego...it's a small restaurant in the East Village. Located near Petco park, this is a great stop before or after a Padre's game!! Everything is made fresh and you can taste the quality! Just check out the menu! They have amazing sides to choose from: tabouli, minted orzo zucchini salad, hummus, greek salad, fries, saffron rice, the list goes on and on. I found about this place a few years ago when they had recently opened and the food keeps me coming back year after year. The prices are reasonable and the flavors can't be beat.

warm pita slices, lamb, tomato sauce, and lebneh yogurt...the creamy yogurt compliments the tangy tomato sauce.

I love that there are so many different style bicycles around and I read about another brand on A Cup of Jo. These are the bikes that I've been eyeing...wouldn't it be fun to cruise around town in one of these?!! Perhaps add a little basket :) All of these bikes come in different styles and colors so you can have a bike that reflects your personality.

loving the color on this one

flower power

'Tis the season for weddings and bridal showers. I recently went to a bridal shower for a friend and the ladies that organized the event did such a great job with decorations and personalizing the table settings. It's all about the details isn't it?!

you can order these arrangements at Costco!

each table had a different personalized gift!

summer nights

One of my dearest girlfriends had a birthday this past weekend and to celebrate we had a cozy dinner outside. She planned a rustic menu with a cheese and meat spread, mushroom bruschetta, caprese salad, and pasta. We turned on some great tunes and got to work prepping food and decorating the backyard. Everyone brought a bottle of wine and we had a blind wine tasting annnd (drum roll)... I won the blind tasting! :)

not one...but TWO meat and cheese plates!

These flowers and lanterns were draped along the fence
I love the bright colors!
